ABM Book Club February Review – John Green – The Fault in our Stars

Hello,

Can I start off by saying I read this book really quickly, I couldn’t put it down! Like Januarys book in the book club, The fault in our stars is a book I would have walked past and never would have thought to pick it up. I am so glad I’ve decided to join in on this reading as I am discovering I like a lot of different genres than I thought I did!

I know last month’s review I posted it later on in the month in the blog, but because I finished this book so quickly, I thought I had to post about it now or I would forget quite a lot of the story by the time it came to the end of the month. Also the fact that I am already racing through my second book of the month already, so I don’t want to end up getting mixed up with the stories!

Firstly I would like to start with how beautiful this book was, I know it’s an odd way to describe it. Here is an excerpt from Wikipedia of the book:

Please remember this will be a spoiler alert post!

Augustus is by far my favourite character in this book. The relationships he has with all of the characters right up til the end is brilliant. Even right up until the end before he died he was still so positive and remembered that life regardless of how bad it had become, was still worth living. His love for Hazel (the main character) is amazing, love like that just doesn’t seem to exist at all nowadays.

Both characters are both terminally ill, Hazel having cancer in her lungs and Augustus “Gus” having it starting off his leg, getting the all clear then after they have went to Amsterdam lets Hazel know that he now has it all in his body.

It starts off with the main characters meeting each other in the Cancer support group, Gus takes an interest in Hazel and they start talking and hit it off. Issac Gus’s best friend is also a member of the support group who has lost one of his eyes to cancer, but is due to have the other eye removed due to the cancer having spread. The way all three characters interact together is delightful, their conversations are full of majestic humour and they always try to look on the positive side of things. Even when Issac’s “Always” girlfriend dumps him just before he becomes 100% blind!

Hazel and Gus spend a lot of time together and become an item. They both share their favourite books with each other. Hazels book AIA for short becomes quite a big thing in the book, as they actually end up travelling to Amsterdam to meet the author to ask a lot of questions that both Hazel and Gus “need” to have answers to.

A few people that knew I was reading this book said that they cried during it. To be honest I didn’t cry as I don’t tend to cry when reading books or watching sad films, but this book was sad near the end when Gus died. I knew deep down that either Hazel or Gus were going to die as the author John Green really made you begin to love this characters, I was really surprised when it was Gus. But then when I thought about it, it wouldn’t have been Hazel as she was the voice of the book. I did however think that the book might have stopped mid sentence like AIA, I’m really glad it didn’t or I would be left with so many questions and would have to stalk John Green!

All in all I really enjoyed this book a lot, so much so that straight after I finished the book I then went and downloaded all of John Greens other four novels, which are on my to read list for this year now!

Are you taking part in the ABM book club? What are your thoughts on the Fault in our stars?

Thank you for reading

Katy
